Problem

  1. The Microplastics industry is a leading manufacturer of high-quality plastic injection components, tooling, and subassemblies for automotive, sports equipment, power tools, appliances, electrical, electronics, telecom, and heavy engineering sectors.
  2. The high temperature inside the shop during summer also affects the machines and operators working on the shop floor.
  3. Plastic molding is performed using injection molding machines, and continuous operation causes the molding fixtures to heat up.
  4. Due to high ambient temperatures, workers experience heat stress which affects their productivity.
  5. To maintain and reduce the temperature inside the shop, the company decided to install HVLS fans.

Solution

  • Four Epoch 2.0 16-ft HVLS fans were installed with the following specifications:
    • Motor : Epoch 2.0
    • Coverage Area : 12,000 Sq. Ft. (1,114 Sq. m)
    • Speed : 95 RPM
    • Peak Power : 1.1 kW / 1.5 hp
  • The Epoch 16-ft five-bladed HVLS fan provides cost-effective cooling and massive air movement across the shop floor.

Site Survey

A site survey is mandatory before any HVLS fan recommendation. The survey revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area : 250 ft × 40 ft = 10,000 Sq. Ft.
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance : 24 – 27 ft
  • Rule of thumb : Distance / 1.5 ≈ fan diameter
  • Selected Fan Size : 16-ft HVLS fan

Test Reports

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation.

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption captures both real and apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans feature active power factor correction and near-unity power factor. Power measured at 55, 65, 75, 85 and 95 RPM was 395 W, 515 W, 690 W, 878 W and 985 W respectively.

Input Current Report

Input current measured at 55, 65, 75, 85 and 95 RPM was 0.93 A, 1.8 A, 2.9 A, 3.8 A and 4.9 A respectively. Input voltage during testing varied between 230 V and 240 V.

Air Flow Report

Airflow was measured from the center of the fan at every 3-ft distance up to 30-ft. Recorded airflow values were 315, 350, 410, 490, 510, 495, 472, 413, 315 and 320 ft/min.
