Problem

  1. Arvind Smart Textile Limited operates a garment manufacturing plant in Ranchi, India.
  2. Due to garment production, a large number of workers operate inside the facility.
  3. The factory shed is made of steel and enclosed on all sides, resulting in heat buildup and poor airflow.
  4. Lack of proper air circulation caused discomfort for workers.
  5. Management decided to improve working conditions by installing HVLS fans.

Solution

  • Epoch 3.0, 24-ft HVLS Fan installed with the following specifications:

Site Survey

A site survey is mandatory before any HVLS fan recommendation. The survey revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area : 233 ft × 213 ft = 49,629 Sq. ft
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance : 35 – 40 ft
  • Fan Diameter Rule : Distance / 1.5 gives approximate fan diameter
  • Recommended Fan : 24-ft HVLS Fan

Test Reports

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation as follows:

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption report captures both real and apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are equipped with active power factor correction and unity power factor.

Therefore the Watts (real power) and VARs (apparent power) are nearly identical.

Power was measured at 22, 32, 42, 52 and 62 RPM.

Recorded power values were 118 W, 188 W, 390 W, 720 W and 1152 W respectively.

Excel trend lines were also used to account for measurement variations.

Input Current Report

Input current was measured at 22, 32, 42, 52 and 62 RPM.

Recorded current values were 0.57 A, 0.72 A, 1.93 A, 3.15 A and 5.11 A respectively.

Input voltage varied between 230 V and 240 V during measurement.

Air Flow Report

Airflow was measured from the center of the fan and recorded every 3 ft up to 27 ft.

Recorded airflow values were 215, 295, 334, 490, 510, 492, 413, 393 and 334 ft/min at distances of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27 ft respectively.
