Problem

  1. Symbiosis International University is one of India’s top ranked universities for master’s and bachelor’s degree programs.
  2. SIU hosts numerous events in the auditorium hall. Students sitting in the auditorium did not feel comfortable due to poor air ventilation.
  3. Air circulation in the auditorium did not meet the required comfort levels, which distracted students during events.
  4. The noise level in the auditorium is also a very important factor. Ventilation systems should not generate high noise so that they do not disturb speeches, presentations, or events.
  5. To provide fresh air and improve comfort, the trustees of Symbiosis College, Nagpur decided to install Epoch HVLS fans in the auditorium hall.

Solution

  • Epoch 2.0, 14-ft (05) fans were installed with the following specifications:
    • Motor : Epoch 2.0
    • Coverage Area : 8,000 Sq. Ft. (743 Sq. m)
    • Speed : 120 RPM
    • Peak Power : 1.1 kW / 1.5 hp
  • Epoch 2.0 14-ft fans are among the most popular HVLS fans due to their excellent airflow and airflow efficiency.
Site Survey

A site survey is mandatory before recommending any HVLS fan installation. The survey helps determine the correct fan diameter and installation requirements based on the dimensions of the site.

The survey conducted at Symbiosis Institute of Business Management auditorium revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area : 74 Ft × 252 Ft = 18,648 Sq. Ft.
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance : 20 ft to 24 ft
  • Fan Diameter Rule : Distance / 1.5 gives the approximate fan diameter
  • Recommended Fan Size : 14-ft HVLS Fan
Test Reports

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation as follows:

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption report captures both real power and apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are the only fans in the world equipped with active power factor correction and unity power factor.

Therefore the Watts (real power) and VARs (apparent power) are almost the same.

The power was captured at speeds of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 RPM.

Power drawn at these speeds was recorded as 340 W, 430 W, 575 W, 800 W, and 930 W respectively.

The chart also shows trend lines generated using Excel for both real and apparent power to account for measurement errors because fan power consumption follows well-known equations.

Input Current Report

The input current was also measured at speeds of 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 RPM.

Input current values recorded were 1.5 A, 1.9 A, 2.5 A, 3 A, and 3.9 A respectively.

The input voltage varied from 230 V to 240 V during the measurement process.

Air Flow Report

Airflow was measured from the center of the fan and recorded at every 3-ft distance.

Measurements were taken up to 30-ft from the center of the fan.

Air velocity values recorded were 280, 340, 420, 480, 510, 515, 480, 430, 400, and 380 ft/min at distances of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24, 27, and 30 ft respectively.
