Problem

  1. Auditorium at St. Francis Inter College hosts numerous events including annual day functions and inter-school competitions.
  2. Large numbers of students sit close to each other which generates heat.
  3. Such arrangements block airflow and make students uncomfortable.
  4. The auditorium requires circulation of a large volume of air.
  5. It is difficult to place air-circulation outlets in the floor of the seating area.
  6. The end-user wanted improved air circulation with very low noise levels.
  7. Low noise is critical so it does not interfere with people hearing during events.

Solution

  • Epoch 2.0 – 14-ft HVLS fan (01 unit) installed.
  • Motor : Epoch 2.0
  • Coverage Area : 8,000 sq.ft (743 sq.m)
  • Speed : 120 RPM
  • Peak Power : 1.1 kW / 1.5 hp
  • Epoch 2.0 14-ft fans provide powerful airflow with excellent efficiency.
Site Survey

A site survey was conducted before recommending the HVLS fan installation. The survey revealed the following dimensions.

  • Total Area : 53.7 ft × 102 ft = 5,477 sq.ft
  • Ceiling Height : 20–24 ft
  • Fan Diameter Rule : Distance / 1.5
  • Recommended Fan Size : 14-ft
Test Reports

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption report captures the real as well as apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are the only fans in the world to have active power factor correction and unity power factor. Therefore the Watts (Real Power) and VARs (the apparent power) are almost the same. The power has been captured at 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 RPM. Power drawn at those speeds are 325, 418, 560, 805, and 945 W respectively. The chart above also shows trend lines generated using Excel for real and apparent power to take into account any measurement errors as fan power consumption can be modeled by well known equations.

Input Current Report

The input current is also measured at 80, 90, 100, 110, and 120 RPM. Input current is recorded as 1.15, 1.8, 2.2, 2.86, and 3.7 A respectively. The input voltage varied from 230 to 240V during the measurement.

Air Flow Report

The airflow is measured from the center of the fan and is recorded at every 3-ft distance. Values were recorded upto 30-ft from the center of the fan. The values were respectively, 195, 215, 350, 668, 650, 595, 570, 490, 350, and 330 ft/min at distances of 3,6,9,12,15,18,21, 24, 27, and 30-ft respectively.
