Problem

  1. The auditorium of Rish International School is very large and numerous events are held there regularly.
  2. Students sitting inside the hall were distracted due to heat exhaustion and discomfort caused by insufficient air circulation.
  3. The climate in Chennai is generally hot and humid even on normal days, making proper air movement extremely important inside the auditorium.
  4. School officials therefore decided to install Epoch HVLS fans to allow high air movement inside the hall while maintaining very low noise levels.

Solution

  • Epoch 3.0, 24-ft HVLS fan was installed with the following specifications:
    • Motor : Epoch 3.0
    • Coverage Area : 30,000 Sq. Ft. (2787 Sq. m)
    • Speed : 62 RPM
    • Peak Power : 1.5 kW / 2 hp
  • Epoch 3.0 24-ft fans are widely used for their powerful airflow and excellent airflow efficiency.
Site Survey

A site survey is mandatory before recommending any HVLS fan installation. The survey helps determine the correct fan diameter and installation configuration.

The survey conducted at Rish International School revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area : 100 Ft × 50 Ft = 5,000 Sq. Ft.
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance : 35 ft to 40 ft
  • Fan Diameter Rule : Distance / 1.5 gives the approximate fan diameter
  • Recommended Fan Size : 24-ft HVLS Fan
Test Reports

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation as follows:

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption report captures both real power and apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are the only fans in the world equipped with active power factor correction and unity power factor.

Therefore the Watts (real power) and VARs (apparent power) are almost the same.

The power was captured at speeds of 22, 32, 42, 52 and 62 RPM.

Power drawn at these speeds was 118 W, 188 W, 390 W, 720 W and 1120 W respectively.

The chart also shows trend lines generated using Excel to account for measurement errors because fan power consumption can be modeled by well known equations.

Input Current Report

Input current was also measured at speeds of 22, 32, 42, 52 and 62 RPM.

Input current values recorded were 0.57 A, 0.92 A, 1.93 A, 3.15 A and 5.09 A respectively.

The input voltage varied from 230 V to 240 V during measurement.

Air Flow Report

Airflow was measured from the center of the fan and recorded at every 3-ft distance.

Measurements were taken up to 27-ft from the center of the fan.

The air velocity values recorded were 276, 293, 390, 460, 480, 492, 417, 391 and 336 ft/min at distances of 3, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, 21, 24 and 27 ft respectively.
