Problem:

  1. CST, Mumbai is one of the busiest railway platforms in India. Many people visited and traveled through CST, Mumbai.

  2. In such a crowded place, physical comfort is a crucial factor. Also, the temperature in Mumbai is very high in summer.

  3. To make the visitors comfortable, high air movements are required to get physical comfort.

  4. Also, it is not affordable to install an HVAC system in such a large railway station. The energy used by the HVAC system is also very high.

  5. To get better results and use less energy, CSMT officials proposed a plan to install HVLS fans in railway stations.

Solution:

  • Epoch 2.0, 20-ft (3 Blades) Fan was installed with the following specifications ;
    • Motor: Epoch 2.0;
    • Coverage Area: 15,400 Sq. Ft. (1,430 Sq. m);
    • Speed: 81 RPM;
    • Peak Power: 1.1kW/1.5 hp;
  • Epoch 2.0 20 ft diameter fan becomes most popular with amazing airflow and airflow efficiency.

Site Survey:

A site survey is mandatory before any HVLS fan recommendation. The survey revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area: 705 ft X 250 ft = 176,250 Sq. ft.
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance: 22 to 26 ft
  • By a rule of thumb distance/1.5 gives us the approximate fan diameter.
  • In this case, we chose to go with a 20-ft fan.

Test Reports:

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation as follows:

  1. Power Consumption Report;
  2. Input Current Report;
  3. Air Flow Report.

Those reports are shown for this site:

                                            central-railways-csm-terminas-mumbai-india-6-.png

Power consumption report captures the real as well as apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are the only fans in the world to have active power factor correction and unity power factor. Therefore the Watts (Real Power) and VARs (the apparent power) are almost the same. The power has been captured at 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 RPM. Power drawn at those speeds are 142, 225, 330, 515 and 714 W respectively. The chart above also shows trend lines generated using Excel for real and apparent power to take into account any measurement errors as fan power consumption can be modeled by well known equations.

                                            central-railways-csm-terminas-mumbai-india-7-.png

The input current is also measured at 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 RPM. Input current is recorded as 0.61, 0.94, 1.4, 2.13, and 2.96 A respectively. The input voltage varied from 252 to 255V during the measurement.

                                            central-railways-csm-terminas-mumbai-india-8-.png

The airflow is measured from the center of the fan and is recorded at every 3-ft distance. Values were recorded upto 30-ft from the center of the fan. The values were respectively, 334, 452, 433, 511, 492, 450, 450, 393, 334 ft/min at distances of 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24, 27 and 30-ft respectively.

Estimated Yearly Savings while Using Epoch HVLS Fans

Epoch 20-ft (3 Blades) fan was compared against Indian HVLS fan Manufacturer. Based on their data sheet, daily, monthly and yearly power consumption and costs were calculated. An Epoch HVLS fan will save the end user anywhere from $13,187 to $50,767 per year over any competitive brands because of its unique technology.
