Problem:

  1. Auditorium at St Francis Inter College hosts numerous events including annual day award functions & Inter School Competitions.
  2. Many students sit near each other. Such an arrangement generates heat. It is critical to continuously circulate air to dissipate the heat.

  3. Such an arrangement provides a substantial blockage for airflow. Therefore the students feel uncomfortable.

  4. In this auditorium, the volume of air to be circulated is very substantial.

  5. And at the same time, It is not easy to place air circulating outlets in the floor of such a seating area at appropriate locations.

  6. The end-user wanted to increase air circulation with low noise levels.

  7. Low noise levels are critical so as not to interfere with the hearing of persons seated in the auditorium.

Solution:

  • Epoch 2.0, 14-ft Fan was installed with the following specifications ;
    • Motor: Epoch 2.0;
    • Coverage Area: 8000 Sq. Ft. (743 Sq. m);
    • Speed: 120 RPM;
    • Peak Power: 1.1kW/1.5 hp;

Site Survey:

A site survey is mandatory before any HVLS fan recommendation. The survey revealed the following dimensions:

  • Total Area: 53.7 ft X 102 ft = 5,477.4‬ Sq. ft.
  • Floor to Ceiling Distance: 20 to 24 ft
  • By a rule of thumb distance/1.5 gives us the approximate fan diameter. 
  • In this case, we chose to go with a 14-ft fan.

Site Survey Results

Test Reports:

Three test reports are collected for each fan installation as follows:

  1. Power Consumption Report;
  2. Input Current Report;
  3. Air Flow Report.

Power Consumption Report

Power consumption report captures the real as well as apparent power. Epoch HVLS fans are the only fans in the world to have active power factor correction and unity power factor. Therefore the Watts (Real Power) and VARs (the apparent power) are almost the same. The power has been captured at 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 RPM. Power drawn at those speeds are 320, 420, 560, 780 and 920W respectively. The chart above also shows trend lines generated using Excel for real and apparent power to take into account any measurement errors as fan power consumption can be modeled by well known equations.

 Input Current (A)

The input current is also measured at 80, 90, 100, 110 and 120 RPM. Input current is recorded as 1.3, 1.8, 2.3, 2.9 and 3.7A respectively. The input voltage varied from 244 to 250V during the measurement. 

Airflow Report

The airflow is measured from the center of the fan and is recorded at every 3-ft distance. Values were recorded upto 30-ft from the center of the fan. The values were respectively, 192, 220, 348, 679, 641, 592, 570, 490, 358, 348 ft/min at distances of 3,6,9,12,15,18,21,24,27 and 30-ft respectively.

Epoch 14-ft fan was compared against Entrematic HVLS fan. Unfortunately Entrematic HVLS 14-ft fan can only go up to 87 RPM. Based on their data sheet, daily, monthly and yearly power consumption and costs were calculated. An Epoch HVLS fan will save the end user anywhere from $1,000 to $3,500 per year over any competitive brands because of its unique technology.
